Port Washington, WI

August 21, 2019

Kewaunee seemed nice and worth spending some time to look around. However, the weather forecast remained favorable so we decided to keep heading south knowing that we could get back to Kewaunee again someday if we so desire.

We departed Kewaunee at 8:10am on August 21 for our 77-mile journey to Port Washington. It was a warm humid day with light winds and calm seas. A good day to be on the lake.

We have traveled by boat through this portion of Lake Michigan a few times in the past, so our tourist-like excitement was fading away.

We passed Sheboygan Wisconsin at 12:40pm and pulled into Port Washington Marina at 3:30.  Bo was eager to get to the grass, so he and Sue went off to explore the area around the Marina. Brian did his usual engine maintenance and boat chore routine.

The weather forecast for August 22 was marginal. Winds would be out of the northeast, not exceedingly high, but strong enough to create 1-2ft swells, building to 2-3ft swells. The wave height was not the issue as much as the direction. Northeasterly waves would be hitting us about 45 degrees off our stern causing a lot of rolling as we moved south along the Wisconsin coastline. The forecast the next two-three days was even less favorable. A brief discussion with the crew resulted in the decision to make our move to Kenosha August 22 instead of hanging around Port Washington a couple extra days. Looking back, I do not believe Bo fully understood the swell height and direction discussion, or I think he might have voted differently.

We had a nice dinner at the Newport Shores restaurant next to the marina and prepped the boat for a bumpy ride in the morning.
