This is an example showing how the manual lock gates are opened and closed. The gates on each side of the lock chamber have someone push on a bar with a handle walking in a circle to open or close the gate. Many gates are moved manually. Some locks have one of the 2 sets of gates moved automatically. A few, like the tandem locks, are fully automated.
